Topic:
English:
Our class story which will play an integral part of our English this term. In term 1 our Fiction book will be “We’re going to find the Monster” and our non-fiction text will be “Welcome to Our World”. Through the means of a story map, the children will be learning the story of ‘We’re going to find the monster’. We will then be focussing on the different settings in the story where the children will be making simple statements, as well as applying grammar such as capital letters and full stops. We will then move onto looking at our non-fiction text of ‘Welcome to Our World’ where the children will write a fact file all about themselves, focussing on using simple present tense, writing in the third person and using relevant vocabulary. Finally, our poetry book we will be looking at in Term 1 is called ‘If I had an Octopus’. In term 2 our class text will be ‘Look Up’ where the children will focus on re telling the whole story and will use simple descriptions to describe the characters in their narrative writing. The non-fiction text In Term 2 will be ‘Meet the Planets’ where the children will write an invitation to join the rocket trip around space.
Maths: In maths in terms 1 & 2 the children are looking at place value (within 10), addition and subtraction (within 10) and shape. The children will be sorting, counting and representing objects. They will recognise numbers as words, count on from any number, counting forward and backwards and will be finding one more and one less. We will also be comparing groups of objects and indicating which one has more, less or equals to. The children will also be looking at parts and wholes, fact families, number bonds to 10, addition problems and subtraction problems. Language is very important in maths and the children will learn the meaning of greater or less than. The children will also be looking at parts and wholes, Later this term, we will also look at shape and a key focus will be our number formation and being able to write numerals as words.
Science: For science, in term 1 the children will be learning about every day materials and will be comparing every day materials and objects, they will identify, name and describe a variety of every day materials, compare and group a variety of materials and finally they will describe the properties of these materials. In term 2 we will be looking at seasonal changes, they will look at changes to the weather and learn language that will allow them to discuss different weather symbols and as a class we will discuss what activities we can do in different weather.
Physical Education (PE): Our PE day is a Wednesday afternoon. We will do a mixture of activities both inside and if the weather is kind, outside. It is really important that your child has the right PE kit each week. they will need trainers, t-shirt and either shorts (if its hot) or tracksuit bottoms or leggings. As we are approaching the winter months, a jumper suitable for exercising in would also be useful. In term 1 we will do team building activities and term 2 we will have a fitness focus.
Homework: Homework is given out on a Friday and should be completed and handed-in the following Wednesday. It will always consist of spellings, which are based on the sounds we are learning in class and sight words. There will also be a maths activity for them to complete (again, based on either what we are currently learning or what we have learnt). Reading is really important and ideally children should read for 10 minutes every night. Please write in their Yellow Reading Record book every time your child reads and that their reading books are bought to school every day. Reading isn't just about ' reading a book ' - you can also help improve their comprehension skills by asking your child questions about what they've read, can they make predictions based on what they know about the story so far, can they find specific words in a book, can they compare this book to another one they've read etc.. All these are important skills that make reading easier and more enjoyable. It is really important that all children read preferably for 10 minutes every night.
How to Help Your Child At Home:
there are lots of fun things you can do at home to help with you childs' learning - reading is a key important one, but also ask them about their day - can they recall what they learnt in each lesson? Practise writing their numbers with them and letter formation. There are also some free on-line activities that your child could do such as Topmarks, Snappy Maths, BBC Bitesize and Maths Zone.
