Year 2 - Earth Class
Hello and Welcome to Year 2,
We are Ms Windebank and Mrs Yemm and we are the teachers for Year 2 this academic year. Ms Windebank will teach Monday to Thursday, and Mrs Yemm will cover PPA time on Friday. Below is some information about what we will be learning, our topics and some ideas on how you can help your child at home. I hope you find it useful.
If you do have any questions or concerns regarding your child's learning, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Windebank, via the school office and we can arrange a mutually convenient time to speak.
Kind Regards,
Ms Windebank and Mrs Yemm
Topic:
English: In term 1 we will be reading Emma Jane’s Aeroplane and using it to write a retelling of the story, and a non-fiction diary entry. We will use story maps and sequencing activities to help develop our understanding of the story. We will also learn the features of non-fiction texts by writing a diary entry as Emma Jane. After half term, we will read Tom’s Magnificent Machine and write a sequel, and a non-fiction persuasive invitation to the museum.
Maths: In maths this term the children are looking at place value by identifying, ordering and comparing numbers to 100. The children will be using addition and subtractions in practical contexts and developing their problem-solving skills. They will also practise how to count in steps of 2s, 3s and 5s from zero and in tens from any number.
Geography: This term we will have a geography focus and the children will be finding out about how to create simple maps and use symbols to locate important features of their local area. They will be learning how to use simple compass directions and use appropriate language to describe the location of features on a map. We will also start looking at an atlas and globe to identify the UK and other countries.
Art: In art the children will be learning about how to use charcoal and will then go on to create their own characters and story book using their sketching skills from Year 1. After half term we will be exploring how to make 3D models out of clay.
Physical Education (PE): our PE day is a Friday morning, and we will have a focus on invasion games for the first half term and dance for after half term. Please remember to send your child into school wearing their PE kit on this day so that they can participate fully in the lesson.
Reading: This is the most important thing you can do with your child so please spend quality time sharing books together. Reading is very important in Year 2 and children will practise reading in our phonics sessions. Teachers will also hear the children read individually as often as possible. Reading books will be changed on Wednesday. Please make sure your child brings their books and their yellow reading record on this day. Please record in the reading record when your child reads at home.
Homework: Homework is given out on a Friday and should be completed and handed-in the following Wednesday. The nature of this work will be a spelling or maths task linked to their learning in school. Children have a homework book - please take care of it and ensure your child presents their work neatly. Please help and guide your child with their homework should they need it.
How to Help Your Child at Home: there are lots of fun things you can do at home to help with your child’s learning - reading is a key important one, but also ask them about their day - can they recall what they learnt in each lesson? Practise writing their numbers with them and letter formation. There are also some free on-line activities that your child could do such as Topmarks, Snappy Maths, BBC Bitesize and Maths Zone.
